RUNWAY: EXTREME IDEAS

Many threads in Western philosophy have been based on explicit or implicit reductionism of wholes into constituent parts. Cells, electrons, superstrings. It all sounds so reasonable because we are taught that it is reasonable. But it has nothing to do with our everyday experience of objects and their irreducibility. Architecture until now was based on the reverse-- putting little parts together. Stones, then bricks, then steel stick frames with infill panels. The expression of seams between bricks or panels creates a default tectonic- you get articulation for free. These features are however the result of the limits associated with mineral materials, such as the maximum size of something found in nature, self-imposed industrial production limits, or limits in human delivery infrastructure. A seam between parts therefore expresses a lack. This lack charaterizes the era of Mineral Materiality.
